The dramatic increase of understanding regarding possibility, vibration and energy coincide with our collective ability to listen and express patterns of life. David Toop in his book Ocean Of Sound paints a powerful image of our modern musical creativity: “... Starting with Debussy in 1889, is an erosion of categories, a peeling open of systems to make space for stimuli, new ideas, new now, this environment included sounds of the world—previously unheard musics and ambient sounds of all kinds, urban noise and bioacoustics... unfamiliar tuning system and structuring principles, improvisation and chance.”

DRUID LOUDSPEAKER SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Druid Mk.V may prove to be the most rewording loudspeaker you will ever own, but she does require some work. Druid is sensitive to room characteristics, tuning, electronics and cable matching.

Druid Mk.V is a fifty inch [126cm] tall, seven inch [18cm] deep, floor standing loudspeaker system with a footprint of 12–3/4 inches [32.4cm] square. It is a high efficiency and high power handling design and features our ten inch [26cm] full-range nanotech driver augmented by a Radian 850 driven tweeter assembly to color in the harmonic structure and detail of the upper most treble. Druid Mk.V is capable of extraordinary power and coherent full-spectrum resolution, bass through treble, despite its relatively small size.

We have realized such performance and form through a handful of key points:

1. Understanding and making good use of Harry Olson’s work on full-range direct radiating drivers designed for and weighted on the human voice. Circa 1930s. All our ten-inch full-range drivers are built on his proven seventy plus year old platform.

2. New acoustic loading technology (ZuGriewe) which affords improved acoustic impedance manipulation between source and terminus (driver and room).

3. Combining full-range crossoverless driver development with ZuGriewe acoustic loading technology and development ensures both are optimized.

4. Use of Zu Event internal cabling and harness designed specifically for Druid Mk.V—and just like the original Druid launched over a decade ago, Druid Mk.V brings back our ZuB3 connection interface, complete with parallel 5-way binding posts to make it easy for those that are happy with there existing cables.

5. A clear set of tone/sound values, with enough experience (music, sound, science, engineering + gut, emotion, drive and practice) and technical know-how to bring it all together.

6. Modern materials and processes.

Druid Mk.V gives its best performance in good sounding rooms, within systems clearly build around “tone” and natural playback. And as mentioned, Druid does require careful system building and power amplifier matching is vital. With Druid’s high efficiency 16 ohm load, high electrical and mechanical damping, powerful resolution of frequency, time domain, and dynamics, amp matching with Druid can be highly rewarding and sometimes unusually frustrating.

Druid Mk.V draws not only from Dominance’s parts bins (Zu103ND full-range driver, Radian 850 based tweeter, Event internal cable) but also from it’s research and development and materials pallet. Cabinet engineering on Druid mark-5 addresses noise and framework function across all fronts: materials, structural, bonding and building technique. The resulting combinations of engineered plate, Nida-Core core, vinyl-ester/phenolic adhesives, heavyweight stitched triaxial e-glass fibers, foams, damping compounds and aluminum alloys create a carefully tuned high performance structure that is still light enough for one person to manage.

Definition Mk.IV is real high-fidelity, a sincere expression of our musical values—of what we create and build at Zu. You can see the strategic use of the mixed materials pallet, judicious use of silver in the cabling and high-pass network, and the uncompromising and intense focus given to all the drive units and the way in which they work together as a whole and interface with the cabinet—and how the whole loudspeaker system works within the room.

Like all Zu products, Druid Mk.V is centered and weighted around the critical human voice (A1, 55Hz, through A6 and all the possible harmonics, to approximately 10kHz). Serving this critical region of tone is our nanotech 10” paper-cored full-range driver—the same developed and used in the Dominance. So with tone, texture and definition realized in the meat of the range, we’ve set about redefining the treble harmonic structure with a cost-no-object tweeter solution.—in very real terms as evidenced in the driver selection, and demonstrably evident to your ears, chest, and soul.

THIRD GENERATION ZU-GRIEWE ELECTROACOUSTICS LOADING

ZuGriewe driver / cabinet / room loading technology is fully realized in Druid Mk.V, and maximizes the high-efficiency full-range drivers’ bass performance within this modestly sized loudspeaker. No soft pooffy, woolly bass here, only clean, tight integrated attack and real sustain and decay.

NEW NANOTECH (ZU103ND/G1-16) FULL-RANGE 10” DRIVER

This new Zu driver delivers stunning attack, shove, resolution and bandwidth—as they should, being lifted straight from our flagship loudspeaker, Dominance. Features include a maximal motor for expanded dynamic contrast and reduced harmonic distortion; a lightweight neutrally hung voice-coil assembly featuring a paper+Kapton former; a linear in-line layup of the inner cone for best resolution of detail; a diamagnetic shorting assembly for dynamic damping of the moving mass when playing at concert levels; nanotech paper cones designed to support wide bandwidth; and a billet phase cone with concentric maximal length sequence diffusion for smooth high frequencies. All this is anchored to a heavy cast aluminum alloy frame with overbuilt bonded and riveted yoke/ magnet/top-plate assembly.

In 2004 we began to experiment with cutting-edge nano-engineered coatings and solids. The initial reasons were to realize the best possible gloss finish and one that would also be far tougher. These nanotechnology engineered liquid solid ceramics, fibers and synthetic resins performed as promised—so naturally we got busy experimenting on driver applications. Here’s what we’ve achieved: the driver’s cone is a paper pulp substrate or core, processed with a liquid solid matrix utilizing several nanoengineered materials. Some key components and compounds include: nanosphere ceramics, synthetic epoxy, cristobalite, plus the use of amorphous fumed silica and aircraft dope. The nano materials and application process reduce weight and increase strength and propagation velocity without incurring any sacrifices in damping. The end results are stunning—our new nano-sanctified full-range drivers sound dramatically better than any previous generation Zu FRD.

We continue to watch and experiment with new fibers, cores and mats as they are very promising, especially what’s being done with buckypaper. For us however a tone-promising pulp-free combination of these new materials has not yet been identified. Nothing has proven to be as well behaved as natural fibers. There’s just something about paper. Its balance of strength, propagation velocity and damping all contribute to that tone, texture and fidelity we pursue. But add the right combination of old coating technologies plus nanoengineered materials and adhesives... paper maintains its advantages well into the 21st century.

ZuB3 CONNECTOR INFORMATION

Druid Mk.V features ZuB3 termination interface, and 5-way binding posts. You can use standard or oversized spades, banana plugs, bare wire, or ZuB3. We make it easy for you. For best results we do recommend ZuB3 terminated Zu cable.
ZuB3 is a cable archetype that measures and performs differently than other cable formats (twisted pairs, coax, braids, or ribbons)—a difference we believe significantly improves performance.

Zu Druid-5 loudspeakers feature this cable geometry inside, and connecting Zu cable from the amplifier to the loudspeaker via ZuB3 ensures best fidelity.

Reasons include:
• maintaining the cable’s electric and magnetic features through the wall of the speaker
• lower contact resistance (better than half the resistance of pure copper lugs and spades)
• ensured correct channel phase (SP+ to SP+, SP– to SP–) as the connectors are indexed
• no possible short-circuiting of amplifier

ZuB3 interface connection via speakONTM 8-pole connectors maintains the electric and magnetic properties of the ZuB3 cable and lowers contact resistance over other bulkhead/cabinet wall pass- throughs. For those that wish to use other cables, Druid Mk.V also features paralleled CE compliant 5-way binding posts. Users that own Zu loudspeaker cables can have them reterminated, free of charge, so performance can be maximized.

HIGH-PASS FILTER DETAILS
While there is no crossover parts or filters on the ten-inch full-range driver, we do use a simple first-order high- pass filter on the Radian based tweeter:

ZU NANOTECH HIGH-OUTPUT CROSSOVER-LESS CO-AX

The heart and soul of any great loudspeaker system is always the driver(s). And with Union we’ve gone all out. Union introduces our new, to the max, co-ax driver—running full-range and totally filterless from bass through treble (12kHz). No coils, no nothin’, just an intimate connection of your amp to the driver. It shares much of the same engineering as our recently released high-output nanotech ten-inch full-ranger (developed for and first used on our flagship Dominance loudspeaker). The paper-cored nanotech cone yields a very well damped and extremely quick cone propagation velocity. This translates into a very tone dense and resolving sound
that is highly expressive of timbre and dynamic nuance. We also developed a massive and powerful motor complete with magnetically under-hung voice coil assembly to realize the full shove potential of all that high- strength magnetic sweetness. Getting all this high-output torque and horsepower transmitted into the cone has demanded a heavy cast aluminum basket, high damping surround and spider, a Mylar/ridged-paper former and high-tensile adhesives to tightly interface the nanotech cones.

ZuGRIEWE ACOUSTIC TECHNOLOGY

The result of all this driver engineering is an expressive and dynamic full-range co-ax driver, where the tweeter section is not called on or needed until the upper most treble range (12kHz and up), and as this co-ax was designed to work within our ZuGriewe box/acoustic loading technology, you get a loudspeaker that is lightning- quick yet still lays down loads of tone density. The system is consistent and linear in its resolution and dynamic behavior—from bass though treble. ZuGriewe delivers increased efficiency in the bass range and reduces noise and distortion, a design that outperforms anything the best bass-reflex or acoustic suspension models can give. Our technology reduces internal acoustic noise from within the cabinet and couples more tightly the high acoustic impedance of the driver cone to the low acoustic impedance of the room. So you get improved bass drum thwack, techno beat hit, thunder-broom shove, snare pop, guitar tone, fiddle bite and burnish... and all able to scale and span even the most demanding and complex recordings (particularly when matched with a great subwoofer like our Undertone). And yeah, voice always sounds human, real and present.

CABINET-WORK AND MATERIALS PALLET

Union is made from North American high density composite wood plate (comp60), machined on state-of-the- art CNC mills. Union uses real wood veneer layed-up and pressed at the plywood factory and not glued after assembly. This ensures your finish will not lift or warp, and it yields the flattest surfaces and tightest seams. For glue, it’s Titebond III, for the highest joint strength and a lifetime of unfailing, moisture-proof service.

OTHER DETAILS

Union’s hook-up wires are x-linked PE / low strand count pure copper conductors, terminated with Panduit disconnects that are high-pressure crimped in made-to-spec Panduit dies for the best sound and longest life. Binding posts are machined from a single piece of bar stock and the male disconnect tab is machined right into it. The tweeter’s high-pass is, by design, a simple, single component network, a single polypro’ capacitor. The coaxially mounted tweeter is substantial, and borrows some of the tricks developed by Radian, namely a PET damped aluminum alloy 1.7” dome and former.

The above standards are top coated by UV protecting premium grade conversion varnish. All finish work is done in Zu’s custom finish shop.

Union loudspeakers get 600 hours of high-intensity factory burn-in to ensuring they will sound great within just a few days of play. Nevertheless, if they are transported in cold weather, they take several days to “warm up” and return to giving you their best.

Sőt a Druid tulajdonosok hamarabb, mint az USA-ban, szintén rendelhetik a Druidhoz való, némileg eltérő upgrade kiteket is. Szeptember elején adják fel a Superfly-hoz való minta hangszóró készletet így lesz abból megtapogatható, kipróbálható is. Minden hangszóró 600 óra durva járatás után érkezik.

Introducing Soul Superfly Mk.I-B

The most important element of a loudspeaker is the driver—the round part that vibrates and turns electric power into sound. And when a loudspeaker is build around a full-range driver like ours it makes the driver all that much more critical. Soul Superfly Mk.I-B has one very big difference over it’s predecessor, it features the Dominance developed nanotech high-output driver. There are no other changes but the difference is pretty huge—more resolution of bass, mids and treble, more resolution of tone and texture, and better dynamic handling of complex music.

Soul Superfly Mk.I-B can be identified by two main features:

the revision Mk.I-B nameplate on the back of the speaker
and the engraved model number in the full-range driver

And yes, owners of older Soul Superfly loudspeakers can update them to full Mark One Bee status with a simple full-range driver swap out.

Soul Superfly is our single-minded response to the needs of users of amplifiers that benefit from high-impedance 16 ohm speakers. That list of amps includes most vintage amps, and any modern amp that is, or can be optimized for a 16 ohm loudspeaker—single-ended triode (SET) vacuum tube amps, output-transformerless (OTL) vacuum tube amps, some solid-state like some of the First Watt models, and even many of the mid-fi Japanese receivers. Our design target from the outset was focused on extracting every last bit of tone and texture of such amps while getting even better power and definition out of the system. Rögtön az elején egy érdekes fotó, ami egyik installációnk, amiről ez a fotó itt is szerepelt már és egy érdekes táblázat, amin két eddig nem ismert hangfal is látszik.

Münchenben lesz még más Zu újdonság is, olyan új hangfallal, ami itt is fog sokakat érdekelni valószínűleg. Már csak párat kell aludni...

"Let’s start with the bass. It’s easy to look at that big ten incher and make assumptions about what this speaker might sound like on the bottom. Don’t. I don’t care if it came from motorcycle exhaust research or primate research, the cabinet/room loading works.Banish any notions of big, flabby, flaccid bottom end from your mind. These are startlingly tight, articulate for sure, but the keyword here is “IMPACT”. These speakers positively devour drums. Not just quick, they’re some of the fastest sounding speakers I’ve heard, electrostatic or otherwise. Transients in general jump out of the speakers with lifelike speed, the driver so well controlled that it seems to stop the instant it needs to. There is zero overhang, zero smear, zero ringing. Despite what appears to be a somewhat live cabinet when you give it a rap with your knuckles, the Standard sounds incredibly un-boxy.
I hesitate to call any speaker that can rock this hard polite, but they were incredibly well controlled and coherent, even at ear-splitting levels. Bjork’s “The Hunter” can be a torture test for big speakers with aspirations for great bass, with its relentless deep synth lines, but the Omens sailed through this track without hardly breaking a sweat. Ditto for one of may favourite albums of late,Brothers by the Black Keys, where it’s the drums that are relentless (and fantastically well recorded). The Omens adored this record as much as I do, serving up big, dirty, noisy, raucous blues so enthusiastically and convincingly you could imagine you were in a hot, grimy little club somewhere hearing it live. These speakers can play effortlessly loud without being aggressive or fatiguing. And, no matter how loud it gets, coherent enough that you can hear every little thing that’s going on in the mix. And, chances are, they’ll play louder without a fuss than you’ll ever want to play them.

The good news continues in the mids, where true to intent, tone, texture and immediacy are indeed the dominant themes. The Omens are no wallflowers. This is an upfront, very direct, very present, very involving speaker. It wants your full attention, and chances are, it will get it. They really shone on the latest (gorgeous) Fleet Foxes record (Helplessness Blues) with gobs of subtle midrange color, detail and nuance. Voices were decadently rich, well centered in space and completely free of the speaker boxes. These speakers “throw” images and voices into the room in a way that I’ve never heard before. Ali Farka Toure’s “Rouky”, an intimate little African blues track, is downright spooky when well reproduced and I’ve never heard it as gripping as through the Omens. With these speakers the music is happening right in front of you. The sound is in your face, and very intimate. And, not surprisingly since it’s all coming form the same driver as the bass, the speed, control, freedom from overhang and immediacy carry forward through the mids and lower treble."

"I recently traded my Presence loudspeakers (end of January) for a pair of Definition MKIII’S and was lucky to have them delivered and set up by Sean and Christian during their recent cross country tour. Unfortunately the cabinets were accidentally damaged. Sean told me they would replace them but not exactly sure when, the 3’s being an upgraded speaker. A few weeks later I received an email from Sean asking if I would be available March 16th that they would be coming back east and could deliver another set of speakers. Not expecting this to happen that quickly, my response was absolutely I’d be available. Two weeks later I received another email from Sean stating your new Def 4’s are scheduled to go into production what finish would you like? Taken back by that statement I immediately got on the phone and called Sean. A new pair of Def 4’s ???

First let me briefly explain we have a medical fragile special needs 13 year old daughter who requires continuous care from either my wife, myself or a nurse, which renders our social life non-existent.

Sean’s response was I saw the happy life you and your wife provide for your daughter, I’d like to do something nice for you guys, when you sit down at the end of the day to listen to some music your going to enjoy it a lot more with a new pair of Def 4’s and not to worry financially I am donating them to you.
Again, a story I feel deserves to be told."

Erről a Zu Omen Bookshelf falról alig találni valami infót .. Kár, pedig szerintem ígéretes darab.
Ha jól láttam az oldalatokon akkor ti is forgalmazzátok. Mi a benyomás róla? Mekkora szobában, milyen rendszerben "ajánlott"? Milyen állvánnyal lenne jó vajon ? (minden dimenzióban elég testes )

Az eddig bejött Omen Bookshelf dobozok kivétel nélkül komplett Zu Omen Definition alapú házimozi rendszerekbe mentek és nagyon csekély tapasztalatunk van velük sztereó zenehallgató szituációkban. Ez alapján annyi biztosan lehet mondani, hogy nagyon hasonló a hangja az Omenhez, egy kicsivel érzékenyebb a hátsó faltól való távolságra, fél méteren túl elhúzva egy kicsit testetlenebb, mint az Omen. Fél méternél közelebb vagy egészen falra tolva egy nehezebb állványon viszont meglepően úgy szól mint az Omen. Falra szerelve is egészen jól érzi magát. Amiért egy Zu hangfalat szeretni szokás, az ebben is benne van hibátlanul. A ProAc Response D2-höz használt állványunkon jól érezte magát.

Íme az új Zu Druid V doboz végleges helyén, még nem teljesen befejezett installációval. Naim SuperUniti szolgálja ki.

Némi magyarázat a Druid V "Big" változata keletkezéséről Sean -tól a Zu facebook oldalán:

"Druid Mk.V is imminent. What you see here is essential Druid5 in a big package. A secret menu item, a custom commission project for Ferenc and the guys at Penna. The extra size here does improve a few things; a larger baffle for one reduce and moves cabinet diffraction points lower in the bandwidth, slides timing out, and widens the differential between point sources (source and diffraction source). But with larger plate you must address plate modes and increased amplitudes of distortion. So for these we used a custom ply layup, using Baltic birch plies and manufactured composite wood, and phenolic bonding. Results, in the "big" are improved bass, improved, stereophonic, a bit better perceived unity in mid/mid-bass wave front (slam), and the "big" is cool looking when in the right space."

"Its cohesiveness was responsible for an intrinsic capacity to craft a huge 3-D soundstage with an exceptional depth perspective. It excelled in terms of musical values. Its jump factor, the ability to unleash the music's dynamic range and emotional expressiveness was considerable. While low-level detail resolution was decent and at times even surprisingly good, this speaker was much more than just about the facts. For starters, rhythmic drive was admirable. But above all else there was on display superb interplay between musicians. The give and take between members of an ensemble was rendered to a degree I've rarely experienced with a multi-way speaker. Many speakers can resolve individual instruments in an ensemble, yet only a handful is capable of conveying an ensemble as a holistic and organic entity.

The Omen Def consistently generated a big tone balance at the listening seat. There was plenty of lower midrange, upper bass, and mid bass energy to satisfy my sonic taste buds and do justice to the power range of an orchestra. Deep bass extension reached the low 40s in my room and bass lines were reasonably well controlled, though lacking in slam factor. Partnered with the 12 wpc single-ended Audion Sterling EL34 Anniversary integrated stereo tube amplifier, the sound was both warm and dimensional. The Audion emphasized musical over audiophile priorities and as such suited the Omen Def nicely. This sweetheart combo delivered warm and lush midrange textures. Single-ended amplification magic coupled with full-range drivers resulted in a depth perspective which at times appeared to push right through rear wall of my listening room. One generally associates imaging excellence with the minimonitor genre. But believe it or not, this large floor stander's imaging prowess is plenty competitive and it delivered the goodies with a tonal balance that minimonitors can only dream about.

...Omen Def does a very good job of capturing the fun aspects of music reproduction. For the record, I enjoyed my time with the Omen Def far more than I had with some speakers costing 10 times more. Packing a potent lower midrange and a big tone presentation it provides plenty of compensation for an upper midrange recession and a few rough edges. This speaker is all about being connected to the music, experiencing musician interplay as if at a live performance. It is less about being an observer and more about being a participant in the illusion of live...."

Ez pedig a 2011-es amerikai RMAF kiállításon a Zu nagy Definition Mk IV dobozának megszólalása a Zu Technics lemezjátszójáról:

Erről a project-ről lehet-e már tudni közelebbit?
Kész lemezjátszóként lehet csak megvenni majd vagy upgrade-ként is elérhető lesz meglévő 1210-eshez? Esetleg egy megközelítő árat?

Sajnos csak Amerikában lehetett venni, és csak úgy, hogy az ember megszerezte majd elküldte nekik a lemezjátszót. Az Európában rendelhető termékek és szolgáltatások között nem volt meg sajnos. Olyan kb 7-800.000 Ft lett volna idehaza egy átlagos átépítés költsége.
